Baffled, I just stared at her like she was crazy. What was she sorry about? “Sorry about what?”

Kemie grabbed the remote and turned up the volume on the TV. Then she turned her attention back to the TV and so did I.

“Those who have just tuned in, the big story of the day is the number of homicides in the District. The city is on course to record over five hundred murders this year. One hundred more murders than last year. The discovery of the four bodies today, brings the total to 305 and there are five months left in the year. D.C. Police today, were called to the scene of a gruesome double homicide. Two men identified as Freddy “Lee Lee” Bailey and Mecca Lee-Bey were both found behind a dumpster on the 1200 block of North Capital Street, Northwest. Both men were found nude with the words “Rat Bitch” carved into their chests and shot repeatedly in the face. Sources close to City Under Siege Fox News say that Freddy Bailey testified recently in the case of the alleged notorious killer, George Foreman III. And Mecca Lee-Bey was instrumental in assisting authorities in arresting and charging several D.C. Jail correctional officers and inmates with smuggling contraband into the jail. Authorities were also called to the 1700 block of Independence Avenue in Southeast, where they found a man identified as thirty-five-year-old Terrell Hargrave who suffered from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body in front of a residence in that block. Medical workers attempted to talk to Hargrave and discovered that his tongue had been cut out. Hargrave was rushed to nearby D.C. General Hospital, where he died minutes after arriving. A man on his way to work at the Blue Plains Sewage Dump, discovered a body inside of a car. According to a forensic specialist, the body has been identified as thirty-four-year-old Marquette Henderson. The dead body had been inside the Mercedes S600 for several days. The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and lacerations to the neck.”

Kemie turned around and locked eyes with me. I didn’t realize that I was crying until tears fell and dampened my shirt. My pain was visible in my face and Kemie read it perfectly.
